Creighton University has a long history in the Dominican Republic through the Institute for Latin American Concern (ILAC). ILAC is a nonprofit organization that provides low socio-economic communities access to certain resources that they otherwise would not receive. I am blessed to have been a chosen participant of the ILAC Summer Health Program. I will work with multidisciplinary professionals – medical, pharmacy, and nursing students – to provide comprehensive care to improve the health for those that need it most. A family in a rural campo community of the Dominican Republic will host me during my stay. I will provide dental care in a small clinic each weekday from July 6th through July 28th, 2021. This program will teach professional students to be globally conscious and socially responsible. As a future dental professional, this program will prepare me to serve communities in developing countries.
My first international mission trip was to San Lucas Tolimán, Guatemala in high school. I witnessed the suffering and dependency created by poverty. The laborious work we provided made a tremendous impact, but as an untrained health professional, I found myself wishing I could do more. I have often imagined myself returning to underserved countries as a dentist since my first mission trip over eight years ago. Now as a dental student, I am thrilled I am making this dream a reality. Your contributions will help me with my travel, lodging, food, and supply expenses. Any donation, whether little or small, will make a huge difference.
