Help Kat’s loved ones & cocker kids get settled

Rest In Peace "Kat the Brat" Nov. 17, 1976 - May 4, 2021. You have suffered far too long and deserve to be at rest and peace! You will be fondly remembered by far more people than I think you realized while you were still with us.

For over 30 years Katie (Kat) Reck (aka Katie (Kat) Patterson and Katie (Kat Patterson-Firat) has been a devoted breeder of American Cocker Spaniels and a staunch advocate for health testing to produce the healthiest possible companion puppies possible. She was a Registered Veterinary Nurse and served for several years on the Kansas Governor's Advisory Boards to help enact laws regarding animal cruelty, breeder licensing and shelter standards. Even those in the industry who disliked Kat (it is a very competitive profession) would agree that she was a top of the line breeder with the best interests of the breed she loved so dearly first and foremost at heart. Her passing is a significant loss to the American Cocker Spaniel community.

Katie had hidden the fact that she has been very, very ill for the past 3 years from the majority of people. Perhaps it was vanity, pride or something else but she never wanted anyone to know that she was dealing with serious health issues. Even those close friends who were aware that she had health issues were not aware of just how serious the health issue really were. She was in stage 4 kidney failure as well as having other significant medical issues. Katie's loss was sudden and the result of a combination of COVID19, kidney failure and bleeding in her brain from a ruptured blood vessel which could not be repaired.

My name is Bruce Patterson and I was Kat's friend, companion, confidant, business partner and for the last 3 years of her life her caregiver. Kat considered me her uncle even though we were not related by blood and I considered her my niece. Both of us are estranged from our real families so we were more like family to each other than our real families ever were to each of us. Both Kat and I received SSDI as our primary source of income which we occasionally supplemented with companion puppy sales from linage lines she had taken years to develop via our business kennel PitterPatterPrints. She was the expert and I only assisted as best I could.

As much as I hate to ask for financial help from others, her passing has created financial demands that I simply am unable to meet especially without her income. Since her passing occurred so unexpectedly your donations for these expenses are needed urgently and immediately. Kat could not afford life insurance and due to our limited income had nothing extra to put back into savings. Without her in the lead I will have no other option but to shut PitterPatterPrints down which will eliminate that additional source of income as well. I simply do not posses the skill, knowledge or devotion to be able to keep PitterPatterPrints going.

In addition to funeral costs which will cost approximately $800-$900 I will have to deal with some financial obligations for which she was responsible (approximately $3,700 for deposits/payments for puppies we have not yet produced which will likely have to be refunded). Additionally I can no longer afford to live where she and I have lived in Arizona for the past 6 years and plan to move to New Mexico by the end of this month (May) where I can afford to live on my individual income (approximately $4,000 for moving costs, rent/utility deposits, fuel etc).  As a result, getting these donations is urgent. Finally, even though her insurance should cover much of the medical costs there will likely be financial obligations for medical care that I am not yet aware of (TBD – unknown at this time).

As a result I am setting my goal at $9,000 in donations to cover these expenses/fees. Kat's kids (our cocker spaniels) and I honestly appreciate any donations that can be given to help me cover these costs. Any funds not needed to help me and the cocker kids get through the next couple of months will be donated to Kat's favorite charity, Rocky Mountain Cocker Rescue (https://www.facebook.com/RockyMountainCockerRescue).
