Hawaii Artists & Entertainment Professionals Fund

Aloha!

As all of you have figured out by now, COVID-19, otherwise known as the Corona Virus, is impacting almost every aspect of our daily lives. This is likely to continue for several months as the virus makes its way through communities.

For those of us in the Arts and Entertainment community this looks a little different than it does for our friends with “normal” jobs. We are primarily entrepreneurs, gig workers, independent contractors, or (very) small business owners. We put on your events, your theatre shows, your bands’ concert. We are your wedding singer, event DJ, symphony musician, theatre designer, and stage crew. We are in the business of making your lives better through arts and entertainment. We are in the business of gathering people together to enjoy some kind of collective performance. We don’t have the option of working from home. If we are at home, we’re not getting paid.

We are being told not to gather. We pay our bills through gatherings. We are facing show cancellations and postponements for many of the jobs which we had lined up for the spring and summer. With these cancelations, comes financial hardship. Some of us might have a cushion; some savings, an emergency fund, a spouse or partner with a “real” job who can help support us until the work picks up again. A lot of us don’t.

Please give what you can to support your Artists and Entertainment Professionals. Your donations will go directly to those in the industry to pay their bills, whether it be to pay the rent, electricity, cell phone bill (so we can get more work eventually!) or put food on the table.

Due to the high demand and low donations received, I'm closing the survey for the time being.

About Me
A number of you probably already know me, and more of you have probably seen my lighting designs in various theatres around Honolulu. Here is the short version my professional bio.
“Janine Myers is a theatre professional who wears a lot of hats. Currently, she serves as Academic Production Manager, Assistant Technical Manager, and Master Electrician at Paliku Theatre, and a freelance Lighting Designer at venues throughout Oahu. She has been working professionally in theatre in Hawaii since 2002, garnering thirteen Po‘okela Awards for her lighting designs.”
Additionally, I am excellent with budgets and finances. My personal finances are in good shape (I’m one of the fortunate ones who has savings to cushion this blow, and I won’t be distributing funds to myself unless things get a lot worse). I have managed the budget for several arts organizations (Hawaii Vocal Arts Ensemble, HPU Theatre, Eden Lee Murray’s Young Actors’ Ensemble) and have advised others on budgets for other events. I’ve written grant proposals, and been on the receiving end of them.
All of this is to say, I will manage donations responsibly and distribute funds fairly. P.S. - Some people have noticed a lag in their donations. If you don’t get a confirmation email immediately, wait for 24 hours before trying again so you don’t accidentally donate twice.
