Jackie Smith is a single, 44 year old woman, living in Patterson Lakes, Victoria. Twelve months ago, Jackie developed bowel cancer that is spreading rapidly to other parts of her body. After a lengthy treatment of radiation and chemotherapy for the cancer, it was discovered that this very rare form of bowel cancer did not respond. This is where we need your help…
The next step in Jackie’s cancer treatment is the trial of a new chemotherapy called ‘Immunotherapy’. Sadly for Jackie, and others suffering this rare type of cancer, this specialised treatment is not on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), meaning Jackie must fund this life saving treatment on her own. The treatment will take place once every 3 weeks, and at $5000 per dose, Jackie’s treatment will cost her upwards of $60,000.
Sadly, Jackie has had her fair share of bad news regarding her health, requiring an urgent kidney transplant in her early twenties and was donated a kidney from her Mum. Since then, she has struggled with her health, and was recently given the news that, due to Radiation therapy, her kidney was no longer functioning.
Jackie now spends 3 nights a week in hospital on dialysis, and will do so for the rest of her life.
After an incredibly tough journey, and an even tougher journey ahead, Jackie is still smiling. She is passionate about raising awareness surrounding bowel cancer and organ donation, and her ultimate goal is to see this type of chemotherapy on the PBS. Hopefully, thanks to Jackie and those that support her, other cancer sufferers won’t have to experience this hardship in their time of need. Jackie is truly a woman to be admired.
