Harvard Cabin Fundraising Campaign

Hello friends,

Harvard Cabin has been owned & operated by the Harvard Mountaineering Club since it was built in 1962. At the time, it was hoped to last for 30 years: http://www.thecrimson.com/article/1962/4/24/mountaineering-clubs-new-cabin-will-be/
The cabin has exceeded anyone's expectations, lasting 55 years and counting.  The cabin has become a fixture on Mt. Washington, operating in support of the climbing community, the US Forest Service, the Mount Washington Avalanche Center, and Search and Rescue. The cabin is a go-to location for members of the ice climbing, backcountry skiing, and mountaineering community, and we in the Harvard Mountaineering Club love what the cabin represents and the community it has fostered.

However, the cabin has run hand-to-mouth for most of its existence, with maintenance and other needed projects often falling by the wayside. The Harvard Mountaineering Club has subsidized the cabin nearly every year of its existence, and we still fall short of where we would like to be. With such a beloved location, used by so many, with such a great community to support it, we think this can change.

Our goal is to keep the cabin operating in the manner it has been for decades while finally being made financially sustainable for the future (hopefully many more) decades. We have high hopes of funding needed maintenance in the short term, creating a lasting fund to draw interest from in the long term, and ultimately making the cabin a viable entity on its own. We hope to accomplish all of this without having to raise cabin use fees, which we do not feel is the best way to garner support.

In addition to the fundraising campaign that we are kickstarting here, we have ambitions and plans to create a Cabin Board of Directors, a group of individuals who love the cabin and who have skills to foster the future of the cabin and relationships with entitites around Mt. Washington and the Northeast. And please consider giving what you can now to help make our vision – an economically affordable, financially sustainable, and equally beloved cabin – a reality.
