“Second Annual Harmony & Hope: Responding to Violence with Music”

In the Fall of 2015, I felt so overwhelmed by news reports of yet another mass shooting and another murder of a young African American male in our society that I absolutely could not sit back and witness this from the sidelines any longer. I had to do something.

I decided to think big, really big, and designed and created a day of healing and reflection with a series of twelve hours of live classical chamber music concerts. This video is a snapshot of the day, giving you a sense of the scope of the music and speeches.

On the heels of the success of the concert, I was encouraged by many people who were involved with the May 3, 2016 concert, either as a performer, speaker, or audience member, to make Harmony & Hope  an annual event. Thus the Second Annual Harmony & Hope concert was born. It will take place on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at 3pm at First Church in Roxbury, MA.

This year Harmony & Hope will be a two-hour performance with string quartet and gospel choir, interwoven with spoken word. The sanctuary will be adorned with artwork created by a variety of community groups in pre-concert workshops around the issue of violence.

I'm asking you for help to bring this event to fruition.
Costs for producing the Second Annual Harmony & Hope include rental of venue and rehearsal space, payment to musicians for rehearsals and performance, printing of flyers and programs, buying food for reception, creating art workshops, purchasing sheet music, doing PR, hiring photographers and videographers, and paying various assistants and experts to help with all of the above.

Gratefully, some of the costs for this event have already been covered by our collaborating partners, but another $9,000 is still needed.  My goal is to have all funds by April 30, 2017.

Your donations will help to transform the pain we feel individually and collectively around violence and turn it into beauty, harmony and hope,  while bridging communities and garnering support for organizations working with families affected by violence.
