**Update*** Graduating May 2016!
Ineed help finishing my Bachelor of Science Civil Engineering degree at UMKC (University of Missouri-Kansas City). As A Civil Engineer, I want to pursue a role in the planning of infrastructure renewal (roads, railways, lakes/rivers, sewers, etc...) in the United States working with, or for, goverment agencies.
I had existing tuition debt from my first Bachelor's degree (Business Administration, Avila University, Kansas City, MO) and I was only able to use Stafford loans to fund the first couple years of my Engineering degree. In 2011 I hit the lending cap. Additionally, I am ineligible for Pell grants because I already have a degree. I have applied for a wide variety of scholarships but have yet to be awarded a single one.
Part of that has to do with some of my past grades being, frankly, poor. I thought it was due to me working full time and my pattern of poor time management. In the Spring of 2013 however, I was diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Since then I have worked with medical professionals, educators, and family to develop new skills that are visibly making a difference. I am more motivated, more focused and have better memory than I have had in my entire adult life. In the spring 2014 semester, I I got a B in Steel structure design and a B+ in Construction Management!
I work, and go to school part time. As of today I pay my rent, Smartphone, car insurance and old credit card debt regularly every month. Unfortunately, I have been struggling to put aside ANY savings for tuition. I am unable to get private student loans. While all my family and close friends love me and support my efforts, I know they all have financial responsibilities of their own, and are not an option for assisting me financially as has already been suggested.
My tuition and books for a semester run about $3000. I have 2 semesters of classes left (as of summer 2015) if I take 2 classes per semester. If you do the math, you see that is only $6,000. The additional funds being asked for are to allow me to cover some of my cost of living expenses. Very soon I hope to transition to a full time internship in an engineering organization which will probably decrease my income in exchange for very valuable experience and networking.
I make less than $30,000 a year. I have no intention of ceasing work while finishing my degree, but every hour at work is one less hour studying.
As an engineering student I am being trained to analyze problems and find solutions. Creativity and innovation are key in this process of problem analysis and solving. So keeping with trends, I am asking the world to help me today so I can make a better world for tomorrow.
Thank you all,
Harlan
