Happiness House Health Care

Donation protected
In 2017, 19 volunteers from four countries teamed up under the auspices of Bamboo to teach English and build a house for villagers outside Siem Reap in Cambodia.

After seeing conditions in the village, medically knowledgeable team members proposed setting up a health clinic using the premises of the Helo School (also known as Happiness House).   We worked closely with our contact Sophara Ngoeum, Founder of KIDTEA – Kids and Teens Education Association
http://www.kidtea.org/ and following a year of planning and fundraising where we raised over UK£1500 to fund initial medical supplies, the inaugural clinic was kicked off in April 2018.

We are conducting simple education modules in the areas of dental health, first aid, CPR, food hygiene, diarrhoea prevention and treatment, breast cancer screening.

At the clinic the children have their eyesight checked, are screened for malnutrition and skin diseases, have their ears, mouth, throat checked for problems and their heads checked for lice. While we can manage minor ailments locally, any conditions that are of a more serious nature are referred to hospitals and clinics for management. And as healthy children need healthy parents, we extended the health check invitation to all villagers, irrespective of age.

In the first 2 days we saw 130 children and about 20 adults. Sadly, thirty percent of the village children suffer from chronic malnutrition and as such a supplemental feeding and deworming program needs to be implemented so they are given the opportunity to catch up with their healthier peers. Almost all children and adults seen by the team have some dental decay but by far the majority had extensive dental decay and gum disease.  Importantly these children are in imminent danger of losing all their adult teeth if they do not receive urgent dental care. Dental care is available locally and for Westerners its cost is reasonable at about $10 a filling, but this is way out of reach for those very poor families.

We have made a good start identifying the most urgent health problems and now we have to focus on developing and supporting supplemental feeding and deworming programs, and urgent dental treatment for those with the greatest need.

Please support us and this community by making a donation. Your money will go directly to fund these programs. THANK YOU!
