My name is Namory Keita, and I am a master drummer from the village of Sangbarala, in the region of Hamana, Guinea, West Africa. Please visit my website, namorydrum.com for more info about me. What I really want to tell you about is my dream, the Hamana Arts Center.
The Humana Arts Center will be a school where Maters and students from around the world come together to exchange, teach, perform and study the traditional arts of the Hamana region. This region fosters some of the greatest drummers in the world, like my uncle, Famadou Konate, and others such as Nounmody Keita, Nansady Keita, Solo Keita to name a few who help to preserve and spread this traditional style.
To all those through out the world who carry this tradition and those who have passed into the amazing study of West African arts know how important it is for this exchange to continue. For this art form to remain culturally vibrant and intact - its artists must earn a living. To have housing, a place to teach, to study, to perform, and to have a center from which to pull this together is essential.
We are proud to say we have broken ground this year. With the purchasing of the property, the surveying done, the design finished, and the foundation for the structure begun - we are ready to do more - but we need your help!
Our project is much, much more than our initial funding goal of $5000 - but we want to be able to target the foundation and complete that first. I must travel back and forth overseeing the project and feel its important to carefully direct it- especially at this stage. This is a long term project spanning the next 3 to 5 years and will be done in pieces or when there is available funding. Your generosity is much appreciated!
The Hamana Arts Center is located on the outskirts of Conakry in a beautiful hillside. The design includes several guest rooms for artists and students, a main hall, a kitchen, dining room and of course the studio floor for drumming and dancing along with a beautiful view of the forest!
I see all of you, my friends, my students, many great artists visiting and thriving here.
