Dear Family and Friends,

Please, help us make this happen!

Our son-in-law, Jason Prunty, roamer mechanic for Med-Trans air ambulance services, has been scheduled for Bilateral Deep Brain Stimulation Stage 1 and Stage 2 surgery this Friday, June 23, 2017, at the renowned Houston Methodist Hospital located in the Texas Medical Center in Houston.

Originally diagnosed with Essential Tremor when he was 17, Jason’s parents recall noticing him shaking at the age of 3. When he was 20, a neurosurgeon at the University of Washington told him he was a good candidate to have the bilateral DBS surgery then, but he decided to delay the surgery because the technology was new and he was so young. Now, at the age of 40, Jason has experienced a lifetime of challenges: because of his voice being affected, asking for a restroom pass during high school classes before it would be his turn to read out loud, having his dream career of being a pilot shattered because air traffic controllers could not understand his speech, handling a glass of water or a dinner plate is always with the fear of possibly spilling the contents, being misunderstood as mentally challenged by store clerks and strangers alike, are only a few of the challenges, and his symptoms continue to progress.

After much searching, Jason met with a neurosurgeon in Houston in 2016 who did extensive research and tests on Jason’s condition. After that neurosurgeon collaborated extensively with other neurosurgeons, Jason was diagnosed with Essential Tremor, and to complicate things, some form of Dystonia. The lab results came back that he has an unknown DNA they have never seen before. They are offering free testing for those related to Jason to gather more information on this anomaly—his parents, his two older sisters, and his 3 children. The neurosurgeon has put Jason in the hands of a trusted surgeon who has done hundreds of DBS surgeries. The date of the surgery got scheduled quickly because of the surgeon’s schedule and it has left all of us scrambling to get details in place.

The cost of the surgery is close to $100,000. Thankfully, Jason’s insurance is working towards assisting with the cost. We will not know until after the surgery just how much the coverage will be. The challenge Jason faces right now is how he will provide for his family through the weeks he will not be able to work. He has two weeks paid vacation time, but the weeks following will be meager because of the need to pay for the remaining deductible on his insurance plan, and the short-term disability weekly payment of $425 that becomes available two weeks after the surgery is not enough to support his family of 5. His company does not have a light-work duty policy if he is not medically cleared to work after the estimated month of recuperation. He has calculated and feels accurate in estimating that he will need $5,000 to cover the first month of living and remaining known copay.

We, his family, are committed to helping support Jason and Angela through this anxious yet exciting time. Anxious because of the risks and exciting because of the miraculous potential benefits. Therefore, this appeal. First of all, we ask you to keep them in your prayers, and secondly, any financial assistance would be gratefully accepted. Your financial gift may be given here at GoFundMe.
