Animal Welfare Action Group Needs
Donation protected
AWAG / the Animal Welfare Action Group also known as Friends of the Appomattox Co.Pound a non-profit organization formed in 2000 in a poor rural central Virginia region . This small handful of folks are currently struggling to help companion animals in our county. Yesterday I stopped by the county pound to volunteer with transporting two abandoned puppies to the veterinarian, 35 miles away. (Yup, January in Virginia there are puppies kittens and ticks--aaccck!) The staffer was at the end of her rope with every single dog pen full of abandoned hounds (hunting seasons over folks) and a few pitbulls. All of these beauties however are fairly unadoptable without alot of creative thinking, training, work and some miracles. But I digress...
You know those days when you reach your last straw and then something else goes wrong...like your most useful tool goes belly up. Their washer and dryer have finally given up the ghost, as in stopped working anymore.
Why use a washer and dryer at a local pound? There are several reasons but the best is that donated blankets and towels can be reused and disinfected between animals rather than once use and tossed, leaving the shelter in need of bedding donations over and over again plus that creates the need for more storage of bedding . Another reason is the concrete flooring in the kennel runs literally sucks an animals body heat, retains dampness and is hard on the joints of older ones. Given a choice of concrete floor or blanket bedding they (strays, given up pets and previously outdoor dogs) always choose comfort, warmth and go for a nice clean bed.
So I researched commercial extra large washer dryer combinations under GE, Samsung, Maytag, LE, Kenmore, Whirlpool, Lowe's, Amazon, Best Buy etc...and was I shocked to see the big ticket prices. Surely if we all put in a couple of bucks we could do this for the hard working folks at the Appomattox County Pound. There are so many needs out there tugging on your purse strings yet donating at this grass roots level really does make a huge difference in a community like Appomattox. Sooner is better than later for this project as the stream of unwanted animals doesn't seem to stop and we have a few more months of cold mucky muddy weather.
I can't express how grateful I am for your time in reading this, for your consideration and Thank you for your help with solving our dirty laundry problems.
