UPDATE 7/21: Today Duncan is undergoing surgery #5. With many recommendations we chose to travel to Baltimore, Maryland to work with Dr. Janet Conway out of Sinai Hospital.
After 5 months, 4 surgeries, daily bone stimulation and physical therapy his bones have yet to grow.
Today Dr. Conway will determine how much of his bones are dead, then choose to do a bone transplant from his femur or bone transport using hardware and a 3 ring external fixator. She will remove the cement rod and install another antimicrobial metal rod.
We will also hopefully determine if Duncan is still fighting multiple infections with cultures taken during surgery. His body could use the break from the heavy regimen of antibiotics he has been on via IV and oral.
I won’t sugar coat it - life has been incredibly difficult, yet we are reminded daily of the beauty and joy thanks to our daughters.
We are beyond thankful for all the support and love we have received. I have felt guilty about my inability to properly thank everyone but the reality is I simply don’t have the time. Please take this as my sincere thank you.
We are hoping to get back to Florida in the next couple of weeks. Upon our return I will be restarting the meal train (a true blessing). If you feel inclined, we still have our go fund me up as well - linked below.
I will try to update again once Duncan is in recovery. In the meantime we would appreciate love and prayers for healing. - Alissa

UPDATE 3/31: Calling all prayer warriors! Duncan is currently undergoing surgery #4 and their sweet family needs all the love and positive energy. During his last surgery on 3/17 he ran into some complications when they were unable to close his wound site. The ortho team also became concerned about how dry his bones were looking. In a nutshell, his bones don't have enough blood flow to stimulate growth. If the bones don't grow and infection continues amputation could be a possibility.

Last week they decided to transfer to Jacksonville to work with a plastic surgeon. Today they will be taking skin and possibly muscle from his thigh to apply to his wound site in hopes to get enough blood flow for bone growth. Alissa was told he would be in surgery for 6+ hours and will be recovering in the hospital for 10-14 days. Their family will be there for the entirety of his stay. In addition, Duncan continues to be on a heavy regimen of iv antibiotics and his liver levels have started to become concerning. He is still fighting multiple strains of bacteria.

Please continue to have their sweet family in your thoughts and prayers. They are extremely grateful for all the love and support they have received from near and far.

Hi, friends near and far I’m creating a fundraiser for Duncan and Alissa and their sweet family. While traveling in Costa Rica, Duncan got into an ATV accident resulting in a compound fraction to his lower right leg. They rushed him to the closest hospital in Costa Rica. He stayed there for 6 days before being transferred to a hospital in Pensacola where he is currently being treated. He has had 2 surgeries, 1 in Costa Rica and 1 in the states but expected to have an additional surgery. Upon release it will be a long road to recovery, leaving Alissa to be the primary caregiver of their two beautiful children, Juniper (2) and Griffin (4 months). Duncan and Alissa are the type of people who give everything and never ask for help, they love to love their friends, and now they need our help! This fundraiser is to help with the piling medical expenses and to help Duncan and family get through this long road to recovery.
