Dear Friends,
This is one of the most challenging posts we will ever have to write in our lives.
***
On February 11th, 2020,  Gwendolyn Zeckowski suffered a series of small ischemic strokes. After spending 3 days in Medstar Georgetown University Hospital, and undergoing a series of tests, she was diagnosed with Moyamoya, a rare brain disease. It is a progressive cerebrovascular disorder caused by blocked arteries at the base of the brain which interfere with blood and oxygen flow to the brain, hence the strokes. Gwendolyn is a sophomore at Univ. of Maryland studying Environmental Science and Policy, as well as a UMD Division 1 track team Pole Vaulter.
***
As a result, she has memory and cognitive deficiencies. Meaning, she has difficulty with memory and recall, as well as and linear and abstract thinking. She has regained her motor functions and is only experiencing a slight weakness in her right arm. She is fully aware. She can communicate. She is still her goofy self.
***
But, to be honest, Gwendolyn has a difficult healing journey ahead. She will need brain surgery that corrects the issue involving an arterial bypass. She will require extensive speech and occupational therapy. She will need plenty of rest for recuperation.
***
The good news? She will most likely make a complete recovery.
***
While this has been an extremely difficult time for our family, we wanted to share it with you all. So many amazing people have already reached out through our multiple networks, asking what they can do. Gwendolyn's Go Fund Me account will assist with medical bills and ongoing speech therapy,  as well as other pertinent therapies on her road to recovery. It will also assist Gwendolyn with lost college expenses.
***
Here is what we ask of everyone at this time: Let us all come together to create ONE robust network. One network that focuses on surrounding Gwendolyn with love, light, and healing energy. There has never been a better time for positive thoughts and prayers. Optimism and strength will be some of our best tools for the road ahead.

Anything, and everything, that you are able to give is most graciously appreciated.
