Missionaries to the Deaf
Raised in Southern California, Eve worked in the high tech field of making Semiconductors. I was former Navy and then a police officer for the San Diego, Calif. Police Dept. Sign language was very helpful in being a police officer, but we never dreamed it would someday take us to the other side of the world.
We eventually moved to Georgia, not far from Savannah. After a 3 month mission trip with our church, thoughts of especially the deaf children stayed with us. They seemed so isolated and alone, in very much a dark world, because they could not communicate. They didn't go to school, as there were no schools to go to. So 9 years ago we moved to Zambia, Africa with the help of our church.
We rented a building where Eve set up a sewing school, and all were welcome. Eve taught the women and girls how to make clothes and many other items. We set up a place to have a classroom and a place for Church and Sunday School. We taught the deaf children sign language which opened up a whole new world for them.
We soon grew out of the rented space, and during the past 9 years built the "Bethel Learning Center for the Deaf" where all were welcome (the deaf and hearing children). We had deaf children living with us that we fed and clothed, taught and cared for at no cost to their parents. We cared for them as if they were our own.
A few months ago Eve contracted malaria, and was taken to a more modern hospital in South Africa, as Zambia does not have a facility. While being treated for malaria, a lump in her breast was also checked. Subsequently, a scan and biopsy found breast cancer. She was genetically tested and was found to have a gene that would make most common chemotherapies useless.
Eve was informed she needs 4 months of chemo injections, 1x a week for 17 weeks, then 1 injection a month for six months. The gene that she has, made the treatment very expensive, $3600 for each injection. She will then need a double mastectomy. The cost and related expenses for her treatments will exceed 100 thousand US dollars. Unfortunately, we have no health insurance.
She is not thinking of herself, she wants to have her treatments so she can get back to teaching school, taking care of the children, and helping the families that we have both grown to love so much. PLEASE HELP SAVE EVE'S LIFE! Any amount will be a blessing, and greatly appreciated! God Bless you!
