My name is Barbara Frohlech. I am an employee and student at Sonoma State University. I met Guy Slater in a Creative Writing class here at SSU. Guy is a very talented person, a fine musician, a local actor, and a gifted writer. Joy works in the medical community. Sammy is a budding actress at the Junior College. Max is still in high school and a musician in his own right. People like Guy and his family are local treasures, and we don’t want to lose them. Let’s work together to help keep them in our community!
They were among the first to lose their homes in the catastrophic fires that have so recently ravaged our beautiful Sonoma Valley. With fires leaping over the mountains, stirred by extremely high winds, the experience was terrifying. And the house in Kenwood that they lost was their dream home. In Guy’s words, “We spent the better part of the last 15 years remodeling our house. It represented countless hours of passion, work, and financial struggle. We raised our kids there. So many beautiful memories.”
Despite the giant shock and loss that they’ve experienced, they are very grateful to have one another and to have the support of all the people who’ve reached out to them. As Guy says, “We feel now that we can get through this because of the tremendous outpouring of love and support. But we are not out of the woods yet. We have a long way to go to pick up the pieces. We have a good insurance policy but it may take months, years even, to settle our claim. In the meantime, we need everything: housing, clothing, groceries….We are hoping to find a place of our own soon, so that we don’t become a burden to friends and family, and so that we can begin again. We don’t need a fortune, just enough so that we can return to work and school with some sense of dignity and hope.”
Guy, Joy, Sammy, and Max will be immensely grateful for whatever you can contribute to help them rebuild their lives.
