Gus' FES Bike
Donation protected
As some of you may know, one our Northern California engineers, Gus Lamen, was in a serious motorcycle accident in July of 2017. He was in ICU for several months in the Bay Area recovering from the multiple injuries and then was transferred to the Craig Hospital in Denver. Craig Hospital is a world-renowned rehabilitation hospital that exclusively specializes in the neuro-rehabilitation and research of patients with spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury.
Gus was there for about 4 months and has come a long way and is now back in San Rafael, CA. Another milestone in the pathway back to an independent life outside a hospital environment. Despite the spinal injury that currently prevents Gus from walking without assistance, he continues to progress, remains optimistic and keeps pushing for more.
The picture of Gus is from Craig Hospital a few of weeks ago when Gus was up and walking with an exoskeleton - He is so determined to walk again! He is working on core and upper body strength to make daily life easier and several other exercises to maintain overall body muscle tone including weights and a stationary bike called an FES (functional electrical stimulation cycle).
The FES bike is a critical piece of equipment for Gus to use to keep his leg muscles and bone density strong as he works to someday walk again on his own. The cost of the FES bike is about $15,000.
It is important that Gus has the FES bike available to him every day or Gus’s leg strength would substantially diminish in that time.
