Gulf Coast Lactation Start-Up Campaign

Tax deductible
Greetings!
I’m Scotty Thomson, a nurse, a veteran, and a mother living in Baldwin County, Alabama. I have more than twenty-five years of experience helping mothers give birth and helping new mothers connect with their babies. I need your help as I launch a new effort to support one of the most important connections a new mom can have with her baby….breastfeeding and motherhood.

Gulf Coast Lactation(GCL) is creating a full service clinic to ensure that all moms in our area have the support they need for a good start to breastfeeding. Twenty-five years experience in  Maternal-child nursing (labor and delivery, mom-baby couplet care, and lactation consultation) have persuaded me that too many moms don’t get the help they need to breastfeed successfully. What can be the most important bond between mom and newborn fails—too often because there is no one to encourage, coach and teach the basic skills that create and maintain a good breastfeeding experience. It is just as important to be able to recognize when breastfeeding is not the correct choice for a mom and to teach her how to feed her baby.

Our services will also include one on one prenatal breastfeeding consults, one on one postpartum breastfeeding consults,  postpartum mood disorder screening, group classes/community support for moms, and newborn classes designed specifically for dads. We will have a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner to provide services and appointments for our families. We will work closely with Pediatricians, Family Practitioners, Obstetricians, Gynecologists and other clinicians who are supporting good birth and early childhood experiences.

Our clinic services will be available to any mom who can get to us, but we expect mostly to serve mothers within a thirty or forty minute drive from our base in Fairhope.

GCL intends to open in 2020. We are busy establishing relationships with insurers and appropriate local, state and federal agencies to be sure we are able to bill for our services where possible.

BUT...starting a new clinic is a substantial investment, and your support is vital to getting us off to a great start. GCL intends to use your generous donation to open clinic doors, purchase office equipment, purchase supplies for classes, hire staff to educate and provide support for parents and families, create screening tools for moms and babies to be able to recognize which moms and babies need to be referred for more extensive care…we want the clinic to be a welcoming place for families to come and receive the support and care so lacking in our community.

“No amount of reading or practice with other children can prepare you for motherhood and breastfeeding. The guidance, expertise, and support of Scotty during such a life changing time is priceless. I couldn’t have made it this far with my breastfeeding journey without her!”
-Katy

GCL hopes to create a safe space for moms and families to come together and get the information they need to successfully feed their children, to recognize when a baby is not getting the nutrition they need and get the appropriate referrals, to be successful parents, to make friends and lifelong connections with other members of the community.

Please join me in making a difference. It's time to provide a much needed support service in our community. It is time to support our moms and families along this important journey.
Any donation will help make an impact. Thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.

“ Scotty had made such a huge impact on our community. Helping so many moms, families and babies. I’m so excited about our community’s future with the opening of her business (Gulf Coast Lactation). Personally, she has been an amazing support not just with lactation but emotionally and physically. I don’t know how to put into words how much her support and knowledge helped our breastfeeding with both my girls.”

"Without Scotty's help there was no way I could have continued breastfeeding."

“I exclusively pumped for my first son for 8 months. It was draining and not nearly as emotionally fulfilling as breastfeeding. When Christopher was born 5 years later I was disheartened but determined to get my son to the point of successfully breast feeding. I could not have done it without Scotty’s support.......Christopher is now 7 months and still exclusively breastfeeding. We both love the bonding we experience while he is feeding.”
-Alex

"Having access to breastfeeding support is incredibly important for a community. When mothers are able to be successful it really raises the quality of life of the community.”
