Seeking Funding for 1 Acoustic Guitar Building Scholarships, “The Art of Lutherie”.

Myself, Woltz Woodworking, and O'Brien Guitars are raising funds to grant to an individual who has the burning desire, intention, and mindset to learn guitar building who otherwise could not attend due to their financial situation. O'Brien Guitars has provided classes to learn the art of acoustic guitar making for over 20 years and during a recent conversation with Robbie, we thought it would be an act of kindness to provide the ways and means for a deserving individual to attend one of his classes. Robbie's classes typically fill up a year in advance from folks all over the world.

How did this all come about? I have been building acoustic guitars for 45 years, yet I am always trying to learn techniques and procedures to improve my instruments. I decided to take an online course from O'Brien Guitars to do just that. Immediately I noticed a passion to teach from Robbie and following the course had a phone conversation, I asked the question if he ever had folks who wanted to take a class, but did not have the funds to do so, and most definitely was the answer. Robbie has been teaching his whole life and I noticed that rather quickly as I took an online course. In some of my other work, I raise money to fund activities for children to expose them to creative arts, so this seemed like a good idea to pursue.

We will be looking for an individual who has the desire to pursue Lutherie more as a career instead of someone who just wants to build a guitar and pursue something else. The investment to fund an individual to learn is significant so it makes sense to choose a person who will use the course granted as a foundation to grow into a career.

What will be provided to a person chosen by application will be a 6 day one on one course of either steel sting or classical guitar building. At the end of the course, that individual will take home a completed guitar and the knowledge to build guitars on their own. We are seeking funding for the cost of the course, travel expenses, along with food and lodging for the days required to complete the course, $6000.00.
