For Dave and Diane Smith

Our friends Dave and Diane Smith are in the middle of a medical crisis and need your help.

After feeling sick and fighting what he thought was the flu for 3 weeks, Dave went to urgent care where his temperature reached 104 degrees and he was immediately hospitalized. Dave was diagnosed with a very rare (5 out of 1 million cases) bacterial infection. He was rushed to St. Vincent’s hospital and Dave spent the first ten days with no improvements, his temperature was skyrocketing and he was getting worse, not better.

On the 11th day, he was moved to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center where he underwent 4 IR guided abscess aspirations of his liver, 3 liver drain placements, a chest tube for a collapsed Lung, and 2 blood platelet transfusions of 4 units each all while battering fevers of 102-103 degrees 6-7 times per day.

> His fevers began to fade on day 19 and because of their fears of additional hospital born infection possibilities, he was allowed to go home 3 days later with a pic-line for ongoing antibiotic therapy and an aggressive oral antibiotic regiment to follow.  He is under the care of The VNA and the watchful eye of Diane and his pups:)

Dave has a long road of recovery ahead of him. His liver is still not functioning fully and he continues to battle extreme weakness.  He'll require weekly doctors’ appointments both locally and in Boston for repeat CT scans and blood cultures.

Dave and Diane own a small business, Trillium Tree & Landscape.  The first several weeks of Dave's illness Diane tried to keep up with the work phone calls while staying in the hospital 24/7 with him.  When the seriousness of his illness was finally realized, Diane and Rich from Trillium set up a way for the business to continue without them. Rich really stepped up but by then their busy season was over.

A lot of work has been lost and times had been tough prior to Dave getting sick.  Dave & Diane worked constantly to keep things afloat, taking the hit personally when money got tight.  As a result, like many people, the savings safety net has been depleted. They face mounting medical costs due to high deductibles and insurance that does not cover the VNA Care, ambulance rides, lab fees etc.  Dave will be unable to work for weeks possibly months to come and as Dave's primary care giver, Diane will be limited in her abilities to work as well.

As they continue to move forward, we are asking for their family & friends, neighbors and customers and other small business to give them a hand.  Monetary donations will go a long way to helping relieve some of the pressure.  Booking work with Trillium, or passing along their name, is also a great way to help.  Dave & Diane are hard working people and in this season that they find themselves it is a season to help where we can.

Thank you for anything you can do. The holidays are right around the corner and as you give this season please consider helping out this amazing family. It will be gratefully appreciated and knowing them, paid forward as soon as they are able.  God Bless.
