Take a moment and read a story about an organization that is changing lives:
UPAVIM is a non-profit organization, located in the marginalized community La Esperanza (The Hope) in Guatemala City. UPAVIM empowers the women of the community, giving them an opportunity to improve the quality of life, for themselves and for their families. It has opened a school, tutoring program, and bakery and has employed the women by creating arts and crafts. As a result, education has come to the community and many families now have a stable income.
Despite the progress, the community still suffers. For example, crime rates are extremely high, killings happen daily, children drop out of schools because they are recruited by gangs and, because of poverty, malnourishment is significantly high.
Therefore, the volunteers of UPAVIM are starting new projects in order to:
· offer dental care to children by opening a dental clinic;
· decrease malnourishment by adding vitamin and mineral supplements in the bread that UPAVIM sells to the community;
· bring filtered water to the community by giving away filters to families that need it the most;
· provide nutrition education in both school and community;
· create a sustainable source of energy by installing solar panels.
Donations and the income of the arts and crafts have funded UPAVIM, but in order to realize these projects UPAVIM volunteers are relying on donations from persons like you.
