What is the need ?
With COVID cases expected to rise by mid July in Guatemala, there will be hundreds of people in need of ventilator machines. Currently there are 4 ventilators for every 100,000 inhabitants in Guatemala*. If we take COVID models from other countries with similar populations as Guatemala, we quickly face the reality that hundreds of COVID-19 infections will quickly overwhelm the already vulnerable Guatemalan health care system. With the objective of strengthening the Guatemalan healthcare system’s response to the pandemic, the project denominated “VentiMec” was created.
What is VentiMec?
Dr. Hector Melendez and engineer Jose Luis Reyes, partnered to design a mechanical ventilator system that is capable of controlling and measuring the parameters of time, pressure, and volume. The first prototype was successfully tested at the Center of Advanced Simulation at the Francisco Marroquin University in Guatemala*. The trials were successful, which led the team to design the second prototype which we are expecting can be tested in humans .
What your support means?
Your support is critical to move this prototype to the next stage in its development. With your support Dr. Melendez and Eng. Reyes, will be able to build a second prototype to be evaluated by intensive care unit specialists and tested in a variety of different simulations.
Having success with the second prototype’s trials, will allow the team to seek the backup of the Guatemalan healthcare institutions, placing the mechanical ventilator in different healthcare centers across Guatemala and perhaps other Latin American countries.
