Stephen is a local, homeless man who takes care of his disabled brother. He was struck from behind by a truck while crossing with the pedestrian signal at Julia St and Forsythe St in downtown Jacksonville at 5:59 am Friday, January 24th, 2020. The truck ran the red light. He had no chance. He was thrown several feet being stopped only by the asphalt as he landed on his face.
He was hospitalized for three days at Shands Hospital being in intensive care for 24 hours. He was released with prescriptions for antibiotics but he has no money.
Though homeless he does not panhandle. He washes dishes (under the table) at a local restaurant. But now is not able to work for probably 2 months because of his injuries.
My name is Chaplain Scott Shubert of the Walk-in Wedding Chapel. I talk to Stephen everyday, and I can tell you that he is not a drug user and he is genuinely a good-hearted person. He doesn't panhandle, he is trustworthy and works hard but earns little. The most important thing in life to him is taking care of his disabled, little brother. Materially, Stephen has nothing. Now he has less than that.
We are also hoping to get him and his brother into housing. It's hard out here for those at the bottom. This is a hand-up for a good person in tough circumstances.
Thank you for caring.
