South Africa Volunteering
Donation protected
I've decided to volunteer in South Africa as it has always been something on my bucket list. The opportunity has presented itself so its time to do it!
This will be a life changing experience working with young unprivileged children in the Wolwerivier Settlement in Du Noon Township.
I will be teaching and supporting them in sports development as described below:
Volunteers on the Teaching project in South Africa are placed in a public schools, where they tutor struggling students and work alongside local teachers. Typical subjects taught at these schools include English, Mathematics, Life Skills, Social Studies, Art and Physical studies however there is a heavy emphasis on English. Volunteers work follows a set curriculum and work books. Volunteers may also be asked to help organize other activities for the students, including sports.
The sport development project operates in the same schools and focuses on developing both the physical skills and general life skills of the children as these schools do not have physical eduaction teachers. Volunteers generally work with children from Grade 1 to Grade 7 and are responsible for the planning and delivery of creative and innovative Physical Education lessons.
What will the funds be used for
Every little bit helps!! I'm going to be fundraising up until the day I leave... Then throughout the course of my stay I will look for people, family or organization that I feel could benefit the most from the money I raised. I'll share where it is going and what a difference it has made. Items such as desks, chairs, blackboards, books, sports items,
as an example as to how far money can go in South Africa is as follows:
$40 = A desk that can sit 3 students
$100 = 50 new books for the library
$400 = A one year tuition scholarship for a high school student
$2,500 = A one year tuition scholarship for a university student
$3,500 = A 30,000 liter water cistern
$4,000 = A bore hole/well that will provide fresh, clean water to a village
$9,000 = a classroom building that can house 100 children
Location in south africa
~40 hr transit
