We are three passionate, dedicated, and energetic teacher leaders who have been accepted into the competitive and highly sought after June Reading Institute at Columbia University from June 26th through June 30th in New York City. This once in a career opportunity will allow us to deepen our understanding of reading instruction and help build an empathetic, courageous, and authentic community of readers at the brand new Risdon Middle School in the Renton School District.
We will learn how to use book clubs and discussion to help students create authentic strategies for tracking their thinking and analysis, support students talking and thinking and groups all while helping students build a life-long love of reading. Students will learn to examine perspectives, draw conclusions, and utilize empathy as they explore new and familiar genres and authors over the course of the year.
As teacher leaders in our school we will be able to bring back and implement literacy strategies students can use in any class, every day, all while helping them become more powerful readers and thinkers! We will be able to work with our team to launch new practices, deepen current ones, and help build a strong literacy culture at the new middle school we are helping open—Risdon Middle School.
By attending we can help reach students at a school with a 55% free and reduced lunch rate with students coming from two area middle schools as well as four area elementary schools to form the first Renton School District middle school to open in years. It's the opportunity of the lifetime—to help bring together and create a powerful and compassionate community of students.
Your support will help us shape the minds and hearts of 795 students this school year and beyond. We will be able to touch the hearts and minds of our students and inspire them to achieve not just this year but beyond. By supporting our participation in this transformative experience, we will be able to support the academic, emotional and social development for each and every student in our school. As teacher leaders we will be able to help influence, shape, and mold our learning community within our building and beyond.
Expenses
Hotel and Airfare: $1400 X3 = $4200.00
Cab fare to and from airport: $120.00 X 3 = $360.00
NYC Week Long Subway Pass: $35.00 x 3 =$ 105.00
Total: $4,665.00 for three people
Our district is helping us cover the conference fee for three people to attend.
