Support Group Art Exhibit

Donation protected
Hello community -

I have been invited to curate a group show at CTRL+SHFT collective in July and August. Since this is a volunteer-run, grassroots space and I am an independent curator, I am raising money to support the costs.

The money will primarily go towards providing meaningful artist honorariums to the 6-7 artists who will be showing their powerful work. It is incredibly important to me to value the time and creativity of all artists, and to financially support their continued work. Any additional funds will go towards the cost of shipping work to and from out of state, installation, and a curatorial fee.

It is important, especially now, to build alternative spaces where we can create, talk, and organize together. I would love for you to be a part of this effort - financially or otherwise. If you are not able to donate, you can help spread the word, send good energy, or attend the show!

Any and all amounts are deeply appreciated!

As a thank you for your donation, I will send you a handmade exhibition catalogue at the close of the show.

Exhibition Description:
This exhibition will explore the role of language in resisting the status quo and uniting creators across seemingly distinct mediums. How do we convey a language of resistance – resistance to oppressive structures, to art historical traditions, to art world practices, to formal and thematic binaries, among many frustrating standards – in order to make change?

There will be a particular focus on the way queer, trans, female, and poc artists use and meld the four primary forms of communication – text, movement/the body, visuals, and sound – to convey personal perspectives and challenge sociopolitical realities. These artists also push us to rethink genre and to find new relationships between disciplines and between media.

Some of the artists are speaking directly to a person or group, others are communicating internally, and others are grappling with the language of others. The show will consider not only on what the artists are saying, but how they are choosing to say it, as these choices are often radical acts in and of themselves.

Thank you!

P.S. The photo is from Consejos de la Isla, an exhibition I curated in November 2017. Pictured are myself and the artist, Reva Santo, speaking about her work.
