We have recently secured temporary premises and are in the process of submitting a development application and applying for registration with the NSW Education Standards Board (NESA) with a deadline of 31st March 2021. We are aiming to start our small school in 2022 with Kindergarten, Years 1 & 2, adding subsequent year levels as we go. Longer term, we hope to also extend into secondary schooling.
The type of school we are seeking to create will be a hybrid of Steiner Education and nature & play based learning that reflects current research. We hope to provide a holistic and child-led style of education that fosters self-belief, belonging and a life-long love of learning. You can learn more about our vision, mission and values in the document provided with this letter.
We feel that a holistic and progressive alternative for schooling in the Shoalhaven Region will provide diversity within the education sector for families and children in our local area. Currently, the closest alternative schooling options exist in Wollongong (Montessori), Bowral (Steiner) and Bega (Steiner & Montessori). As such, Green Mountain School has the potential to capture students who may not thrive within mainstream schooling.
Green Mountain School aims to support children to cultivate a clear understanding of who they are and where they fit in our rapidly changing world. Our style of education will focus on enhancing self-belief, confidence, resilience and optimism for the future. To ensure accessibility, we plan to provide bursary places for children from disadvantaged or minority backgrounds.
The working group holds a vision of creating not just a school, but a thriving community. We are currently implementing a structure and governance system that will allow us to work together in a way that is collaborative and harmonious, allowing for all voices to be heard. We would love for our school to become a place where our surrounding community can gather together, with weekend markets, environmental initiatives and partnerships, community gardens and skill sharing. As part of our curriculum, we are hoping to draw upon experts in the community to share their skills and expertise with students.
Green Mountain School Initiative exists because as a burgeoning community, we recognise the immense challenges we are currently facing socially, economically and environmentally. We want to do all we can to, not only equip children with the qualities and skills they’ll need to adapt and thrive in the future, but also to contribute to a new paradigm of living that is sustainable, regenerative and harmonious for all people, starting with our beloved Shoalhaven community.
Developing respectful and collaborative relationships with local Elders and our First Nation community is a core value of our school. We are in the process of seeking permission and guidance from the Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) and Nowra Land Council as well as reaching out to the Aboriginal consultative group at Shoalhaven City Council. We hope this is the beginning of a rewarding and mutually beneficial relationship with our local First Nation community.
Currently in Stage 1 of fundraising we are looking for funding to cover development application lodgement fees, fire safety inspection and plan, town planner professional fees, membership fees for SEA (Steiner Education Australia) and AIS (Association of Independent Schools), financial viability certification and associated costs.
