Who We Are:
Hi,  my name is Kathleen and I’m a journalist specialising in beauty with a heritage that links me to Myanmar (Burma). It’s a country that has hugely enriched my life, and that I feel privileged to be connected to, via my grandmother, who as a young girl worked in a cheroot “factory” until she met my Irish grandfather who married her.  Like many of us, I have been moved by recent events and when my friend and colleague, the amazing brand-builder and PR Jo Jones, contacted me to say, "Well, what shall we do about this?!" I jumped at the chance to set up a fundraiser with her that could do some long-term good for a country that needs our support right now.  With many friends in the fashion and beauty industry, we've been able to round up some amazing prizes (check out our instagram for more details - they're amazing!) to cheer everyone up after this long pandemic, and also support some great charities.

Why We’re Raising Funds:
We’re raising money because we want to support the people of Myanmar following a disruptive time during which education and medical supplies have been badly affected.

How the Money Will Be Used:
We've selected three charities we feel will be able to support in both the short and long term, and have the experience to manage whatever life throws at them:
Medical Action Myanmar UK http://www.mam.org.mm : MAM offers over a million free medical consultations a year to people who might not otherwise be able to get to a doctor. MAM is also currently working hard to circulate food in areas where there is malnutrition, as well as provide badly needed medical supplies and support for those in need.
United World Schools https://www.unitedworldschools.org/blogs/where-we-work/myanmar   These funds will help deliver education in remote and marginalised communities in Myanmar, despite the challenges of conflict and Covid-19. Schools have been closed for an entire year, but UWS remain laser-focused on making sure children can continue to learn and thrive, regardless of where they live. Working to support 4,000 children through our innovative distance learning programme, their dedicated network of local teachers has a life-long understanding of local languages and cultures.
Prospect Burma https://prospectburma.org/:  With over 30 years’ experience working in Myanmar, including through periods of conflict, natural disaster and disease, Prospect Burma is passionate about creating a positive future.  It offers scholarship programmes to help young people get to universities outside the country, to study to become the doctors, teachers, engineers and many other professionals Myanmar will desperately need to rebuild its shattered society.

How We’ll Get the Funds to Those in Need:
All three charities  have bases in the UK, which means we can ensure the funds won’t get stuck en route; and because they are non-political charities, they can still ensure their important work will be continued. Your donations will go directly to Medical Action Myanmar, who will then withdraw the funds and share equally with Prospect Burma and United World Schools.

Why This is So Important to Us:
This is a critical time for the people of Myanmar, with a long history of internal conflicts enduring many years, as well as political unrest and the fall out of a pandemic that has seen many of its population slide further into poverty. It's hard to stand by on the sidelines and not be able to help, but by supporting these charities, not only are we showing the people of Myanmar that we care, but we are able to provide some hope that the things we take for granted here in the UK - education and health - might also one day be theirs.

HOW TO DONATE:

You can only claim Gift Aid on your donation if all the following apply:

- You are not receiving anything in return for your donation.
- It comes from your own money.
- It’s not payment for goods, services or tickets to a raffle or event.

NB: THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT IF YOU'D LIKE TO WIN A PRIZE: If your donation relates to any of the above, please do not claim Gift Aid. If you do check that box, your donation will be treated as a donation and you will NOT be entered into the sweepstakes.
