On November 1st, D.J. woke up not feeling well. He had body shakes, was cold and could not get warm & began getting sick. As the day and night went on, he got progressively worse. During the middle of the night he began to have issues breathing and called his daughter around 2:30 in the morning to bring him to the hospital to get checked out. Upon arrival to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital they immediately went to work seeing how sick he actually was. He couldn't breath, had rapid heart rate and was vomiting. He stayed in the emergency room for a while had test after test done then was sent to ICU for further care. It was then discovered D.J. had pneumonia in both of this lungs which inhibited him from getting the oxygen he needed in order to survive. Early in the night he received a breathing treatment that should have helped him. It didn't. It made things worse. It was at this time they decided to put him on a respirator. The respirator would breath for him since he couldn't. D.J. was sedated and the respirator was added. As the night and next day went on with zero improvements, it was decided that Charlotte did not have the resources he needed to improve nor survive. The severity of his condition were increasing and every moment of care counted in order to allow D.J. to survive and overcome this. D.j.'s sister in law Michelle who works in the medical field provided support to the family, provided input on his care and also recommended him to be transferred to Hartford. Without her healthcare knowledge and support, D.j. would not be here today.
Later that night, Life star was called and he would be flown to Hartford Hospital for further advanced care. For those who know him, he has never flown before and was extremely scared to. As his son Josh said, "your about to take your first flight and your not even awake for it."
Once D.J. arrived at Hartford Hospital, he was immediately given the care he needed to survive. Over time his vitals and oxygen levels slowly improved but he still had a long road of recovery to go. He remained on the respirator in ICU for two weeks. After rigorous around the clock care, he finally was able to be ventilator free and was able to improve enough where he was able to breath on his own.
After nearly two weeks on the ventilator in ICU, D.J was able to make the improvements needed to be transferred to another floor. He began to walk with assistance, eat meals again and start to do the things that were limited while he was ill.
After a few days in the hospital on the regular floor he was then able to go to Rehab where they monitored him and helped him with his muscles and movement. After two days he was sent home to recuperate.
As many of you know D.J. is well on the road to recovery, but not quite ready to return to work as of yet. As his medical bills are now coming in he just found out today that CT does not have a PAID Family Medical Leave nor does he have short term disability coverage. He now has no income at this time. All donations received will be used to cover incoming and ongoing medical expenses until he can get back to work.
