Yo - I'm Alex and I am trans. Actually, I'm Alex and I live in Virginia, have the two best cats in the world, am getting married next year, work with kids, and love any day I can spend walking around DC. In all of that, at some point in my day whether it is when I put on my binder or take my hormone shot or have to tell a vague story about my past, I am reminded of the trans part.
I am privileged to afford my rent and student loans. I work for a non-profit and am happy to give back to my community and be able to afford my life. All of this does not leave room for savings. I know that not being able to have a savings is better than not having enough to live, but to have that money for my top surgery is in my far distant future (if it is even in my future) if I don't put my hesitations aside and reach out to others for support.
If you aren't sure about what the past two paragraphs are about, here is the short version. I was born female and have transitioned over the past six years to the person I am today. I take bi-weekly hormone shots and live every day as who I am, Alex. Any time I get dressed, I wear a binder in order to flatten my chest. Over the years, I have evolved from back supports meant for work outs that cut into me to the full torso one I wear today (less scars, but increase in price). Now, I am raising money to not have to wear a binder each day and actually take my shirt off and be proud of the chest in the mirror. Insurance does not cover these surgeries and they aren't cheap. I hope to raise $8,000 and the thought of it is daunting.
Anything that anyone can give would mean the whole entire world to me.
