As a professional musician it's difficult to earn even a meager existence. Things like owning a house, vacations and even the ability to afford health insurance are out of reach. In my former career in the newspaper business I was able to afford some of those things in the past but with the demise of newspapers in general I no longer can.
On with my story.....
On October 4th I was unloading my drums to do an outdoor gig. Over the three weeks prior I had a severe case of Bronchitis. In nearly 100 degree heat with a ton of dust in the air and lugging my drums up a hill I found myself unable to breath. My heart rate went through the roof and, luckily for me, there was a cardiologist there to check out my vitals. I went into septic shock where the infection spread into my bloodstream and my heart rate skyrocketed.
Paramedics were called and I was taken to the hospital. I was stabilized after about 6 hours.
A few weeks later the bills started to come in.
Ambulance $2,206.73
Emergency Room Physician $1,048.00
Emergency Room $7,277.78
Total.....$10,532.51
So I applied to MediCal to see about getting help with the bills and my rejection letter said I make too much money to qualify. I won't embarrass myself with what I make but if you are a musician reading this you know my plight.
So that's it. I've never done anything like this before or have ever asked for help.
So many of my fellow musicians are having serious medical problems too. Cancer, strokes and worse.
