Cheng Chang Funeral Expense Donations

On September 21st, 2023, Cheng Chang was reported missing at the San Luis Reservoir in California by his family during a fishing trip. After a long search conducted by the Merced County Sheriff’s Office Water Rescue and Recovery Team, with help from Cheng’s family and many kind volunteers, Cheng’s body was finally found on October 1st, 2023. It is with great tragedy that our father Cheng Chang’s life ended with him doing what he loved most. He’s been a fisherman at the San Luis Reservoir since the late 1980s.

Cheng was an avid sportsman who enjoyed fishing, crabbing, hunting, and hiking. He also loved playing poker and billiards, which he was known to be really good at. He spent his younger days playing the Hmong sport called “Tuj Lub" and kept that tradition by carving these tots by hand for the children who showed interest in playing this sport in the Hmong community. He is remembered for his kindness, calm smile, love for people, and bravery. He was very passionate and never let anything slow him down—be it poor weather or any other obstacle.

Cheng was a Hmong refugee of war who immigrated to the United States in the early 1980s after living in Ban Vinai refugee camp, Thailand. Prior to his family finding refuge in Thailand, as early as six years old, Cheng took an important role in helping his widowed mother and siblings flee by foot in the jungle of Laos during the Secret War. He is the second-eldest of seven children. Our father Cheng was one with a heart of gold, he was always willing to help anyone in need.

Devastated by his loss, he leaves behind his mother, wife, 8 children, and 3 grandchildren. The youngest of his children are ages 2, 4, and 9, and now face the unimaginable challenge of life without their father.

All donations, big or small, will go towards giving Cheng a traditional Hmong funeral so that his grieving family may help him find peace in the afterlife. Any excess will support his family during the financial hardships they will soon face.

We are forever grateful for any help during this very difficult time.

Thank you,
The Chang Family
