Gordie gets his groove back

Gordie update, 07/10
Where do I even begin?
A very dedicated team of rescue people and doctors have been treating Gordie's skin issues diligently for the last 8 months. Success has waxed and waned, but we continue to search for answers.
Today, we got an answer. "Ichthyosis." The result of a genetic mutation, this congenital disease can be managed but not cured. He was born with this and the dermatologist thinks that likely is the reason he wound up a stray.
Ichthyosis causes dry, scaly skin on the body and hyperkeratinization on the paws. It can cause water loss because the skin doesn't hold moisture. The skin is scruffy and wrinkled. It can range from mild to severe, but doesn't cause or result from other issues.
The important thing is that this CAN be managed. Gordie will need baths and special lotions, both of which he loves. He'll need a compassionate, watchful adopter. A raw diet and raw goat's milk will help. And he may need medicine from time to time to keep secondary infections at bay. As long as the condition is under control, he's not in pain or discomfort.
Perhaps more important is the fact that Gordie is full of life and love. At only 2 years old, he's got a lot of living left to do. We will continue to give him everything he needs and to search for Gordie's forever family. Why? Because that's what rescue is all about.
