Caring for Carson

Let me introduce you to Danielle King.  Mrs. King is a SAIL (Social and Academics Instruction for Life) teacher at Township Three Elementary School in Shelby, NC.  Her students know her as Ms. Danielle.  Every morning, Mrs. King greets her students at the back parking lot of the school building with the biggest smile possible.  Her smile is contagious, and her students are so excited to come into her classroom and start a day filled to the brim with learning.  Mrs. King is very energetic, enthusiastic, loving, supportive, and caring of all of her students.  She has great communication with her families and is very well respected among her peers.  What people don’t know about Mrs. King is that her daughter, Carson, has had many health issues the past few years and still many unknowns regarding a spot in her brain.  Amongst all the concerns with her daughter, Mrs. King never lets others know what all she has going on and has a solid faith in God that keeps her going.

More about Carson...

Although Carson has experienced headaches since a young child, she has been battling severe and persistent headaches for the past two years.  She has missed many days of school and much classwork due to the pain she experiences on a daily basis.  Carson has met with many specialists over the past year and a half throughout NC. She has undergone multiple scans and tests along with extensive lab work and genetic testing in trying to determine what is causing her severe pain.  After many tests and multiple doctor visits, Carson was diagnosed with having multiple parietal foramina (abnormalities-holes) within her skull, as well as an unidentified spot that has been discovered within her brain.  Scans indicate that her brain has begun to “cone upwards'' and protrude her skull at the foraminas; something that has all of her doctors intrigued since they have never seen anything like this before. While her doctors are still uncertain of the cause of her pain, Carson has a phenomenal medical team at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem working with her, assisting, supporting, and treating her at this time.  While doctors are still not sure about the unidentified spot on Carson’s brain and believe it is too risky and dangerous to pursue brain surgery at this time, Carson has recently been approved to have skull reconstruction surgery, to close the foraminas within her skull, in hopes that her brain will resolve back to its “normal” shape, reducing pressure within her head, thus eliminating her headaches.  Carson’s surgery is scheduled for this Friday, May 7.  This will be a lengthy and delicate surgery, and she will have to stay in the hospital for about a week afterwards, depending on her recovery.   They will have to shave her head and she will be cut from ear to ear in a zig-zag pattern in order to expose her skull and to perform the surgery.  Doctors will be cutting existing bone from Carson’s skull to use during her reconstruction. Upon returning home, Carson will have a lengthy recovery as she heals and her skull fuses and grows back together from her surgery. Doctors will continue to monitor the unidentified spot within her brain.

With all of this going on, Mrs. King knows that God remains in control, and that He will take care of Carson.  Mrs. King is a woman of God and has kept her faith during this time.  Please pray for Carson, the medical team and that this procedure will bring a long awaited healing and relief to sweet Carson, who is only 14 years old.  Please also pray for Mrs. King, her husband, son and family members who will be alongside Carson on this journey.

You can imagine the financial toll that this has taken on her family.  If you feel led to give, friends of Danielle have set up a Go Fund Me account to help cover medical costs during this time and to help this family have one less thing to worry about.  Join me as we rally the community together and Pray for Carson.
