Help Fund A School In Africa

Dear Family and Friends,

Happy Summer to all. I hope everyone is enjoying the final days before kids head back to school; which is actually the purpose of this e-mail. We all know how important an education is, and how fortunate we are to have the opportunities afforded to us because of where we were born. When I was in Dubai last year I met an incredible young man who was building a school in Malawi, Africa. As I tell you more below, you will see how amazing this story is, and why I have been helping to raise money to build this school.

There is a small village in NkhotaKota, Malawi, Africa named Likuchi. For centuries Likuchi has not had a school, and hundreds of children in the village and nearby areas have to travel far distances up to 20km to get to any kind of education. Banonie Mwale was one of those children. In 2001, at the age of 13, Banonie met Jenny Naylor of the UK who was on expedition in Malawi. She saw a passion and energy in Banonie that was remarkable, and convinced him to travel to a near village to go to school.

After Banonie finished school, Jenny Naylor was recruiting for the new Atlantis Resort in Dubai and because of the education he had gotten, he was eligible for employment. In 2008 he started work with Atlantis. He vowed to give something back and immediately began using a large portion of his salary to start a nursery school in Likuchi, NkhotaKota named the Jenny Naylor Nursery School. His personality and smile are larger than life and every guest he encounters is positively impacted by his genuine love for people. Banonie works 52 hours a week at Atlantis and makes $5,000 per YEAR. Banonie sends a large portion of that salary back to the school in his village to ensure others have the opportunity to be educated. They use the church grounds as the classrooms and enrolled 50+ children in the nursery school. In April of 2016, of the 3000+ employees at Atlantis the Palm, Dubai, Banonie was winner of Legend (Employee) of the Month and was runner up for Legend of the Year for 2016.

I met Banonie in 2016 when I was doing a short project in Dubai for the Atlantis Resort. I saw his passion and dedication to fulfilling a vision of helping other children in Malawi receive an education. He and his wife Grace started the Banonie Mwale Charitable Foundation with the goal of erecting buildings to house not only the nursery school, but with a vision to add primary and secondary classrooms as well.

Malawi is nicknamed "The Warm Heart of Africa" for its friendly spirit and welcoming people. According to the United Nations, Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world and most Malawian people live on less than $1 a day. To educate a child, it costs approximately $20 a month for supplies, uniforms, shoes and fees.

We have an incredible opportunity to help. A small gesture from us will go a long way. $25 will buy 120 bricks or 350 pounds of cement. $83 will pay 2 teacher’s salaries for a month. A building with 3-6 classrooms is $21,000.

As I mentioned, I had the pleasure of getting to know Banonie while I was in Dubai. I cannot put into words what an incredible individual he is. Doug and I are so passionate about this, that I will match any donation of $100 or more up to $2500 to get the first building completed. Any amount of any size is more than appreciated!!!

Thank you in advance for your kindness and warm generosity. Please feel free to pass it along to anyone you think might be interested in assisting with this campaign.
