We are a team of eight molecular biology students from Göttingen University and are enthusiastic to participate in this year’s international Genetically Engineered Machine Competition (iGEM) for master students. For us, the iGEM competition is a unique opportunity to apply our knowledge to an interesting and highly relevant topic. Currently, there may be no other chemical compound or herbicide as controversially discussed throughout media and society as glyphosate. As scientists our responsibility is to take part in the debate and contribute to the growing problem.
Why is there such a controversy about this herbicide? Although it is the safest herbicide currently known, its long-term effects on the environment and human health are not fully assessed yet. Many research groups are investigating, its influence on biodiversity, cancer risk, insect distinction, water and soil quality and risk of antibiotic resistances. However, we are trying to take a different approach.
For our project we want to genetically engineer the model organism Bacillus subtilis for glyphosate detection and its degradation. Therefore, we introduce a reporter system, allowing us to visualize the presence of glyphosate. With our idea, glyphosate could be detected in an easy and cost-efficient way!
But the work in the laboratory is only part of the story. Additionally, we are planning information events like a panel discussion, a science slam and information events in schools, to name only a view, to raise awareness of chances and risks of glyphosate. You are very welcome to join us in all our events.
In the end of the competition all teams are invited to a final jamboree in Boston, which gives us the opportunity to exchange knowledge with scientists from all over the world. However, we also need to raise money for board and lodging.
Unfortunately, our university can only provide us with a small portion of the money needed to buy equipment and chemicals. We are still missing 10 000 € to finalize our project and we are hoping to get at least 5000 € with your support.
This is why we need you to help us achieve our dream to compete in the international iGEM competition and make this planet a safer and healthier place for everyone.

Wir sind acht engagierte Molekularbiologie Studenten der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen und möchten an dem diesjährigen iGEM (international genetically engineered microorganism) Wettbewerb teilnehmen. Der Wettbewerb gibt uns die einzigartige Möglichkeit unser gelerntes Wissen in einem relevanten Projekt zu verwirklichen. Aktuell wird wohl keine andere Chemikalie und kein anderes Herbizid so kontrovers diskutiert, wie Glyphosat. Als Wissenschaftler sehen wir es als unsere Aufgaben an, an dieser Debatte teilzunehmen und eine Lösung für das wachsende Problem zu finde.
Nur- warum wird Glyphosat momentan in allem Medien so kontrovers diskutiert? Auch wenn es im Moment als das sicherste Herbizid gilt, sind die Langzeitauswirkungen auf die Umwelt oder den menschlichen Organismus noch nicht vollkommen erforscht. Aus diesem Grund versuchen viele Forscher den Einfluss von Glyphosat auf ökologische wie auch medizinische Probleme; beispielsweise Biodiversität, Krebsrisiko, Insektensterben, Veränderung der Grundwasser -und Bodenqualität sowie Antibiotikaresistenz zu erforschen. Im Gegensatz dazu, möchten wir einen alternativen Weg einschlagen und einen neuen Beitrag zur Glyphosat Debatte leisten.
In unserem Projekt möchten wir den Modellorganismus Bacillus subtilis nutzen, um Glyphosat nachweisen zu können und abzubauen. So wird die Akkumulation des Herbizids verhindert. Dazu möchten wir ein Reportersystem in den Organismus einführen, wodurch es uns möglich, ist die Anwesenheit von Glyphosat zu visualisieren. Durch unsere Idee kann Glyphosat einfach und kosteneffizient nachgewiesen werden.
Doch die Laborarbeit ist nur ein kleiner Teil unseres Projekts. Dazu gehört außerdem Arbeit mit der Öffentlichkeit, um Interesse für diese Kontroverse zu wecken. Diverse Informationsveranstaltungen, wie eine Podiumsdiskussion, einen Science Slam und mehrere Besuche in verschiedenen Schulen sind in Planung.
Der Wettbewerb endet mit einem finalen Ausscheid in Boston, USA. Hier können wir dann mit anderen Wissenschaftlern in einen Dialog treten können. Dafür fallen zusätzlich Kosten und Logis an.
Leider kann unsere Universität uns nur ein Bruchteil des Geldes zur Verfügung stellen, welches benötigt wird um die Kosten für Geräte und Chemikalien zu decken. Um dieses Ziel zu verwirklichen fehlen uns noch 10 000€ von denen wir mindestens 5 000€ durch eure Unterstützung sammeln wollen. Deshalb brauchen wir eure Hilfe, um unseren Traum zu erfüllen, beim internationalen iGEM Wettbewerb teilzunehmen und diesen Planeten zu einem besseren Ort zu machen.
