Global Emergency Care Skills (GECS)

We’re Bronagh and Siobhán, two Dublin based Doctors fundraising for Global Emergency Care Skills (www.GECS.ie); a homegrown, voluntary, non-profit organisation founded in 2008 providing emergency care and trauma skills training to healthcare professionals in developing countries where Emergency Medicine is a growing speciality.

To date, GECS has taught nine training courses across six African countries including Kenya, Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, Ghana and Ethiopia reaching hundreds of doctors, nurses and medical officers.

The courses are run in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), the College of Surgeons of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa (COSESCA) and the African Federation for Emergency Medicine. The curriculum is based on best international evidence but tailored to local resources and epidemiology and is devised in close collaboration with the hosting emergency medicine physicians. They are free of charge to all participants.

Their next course will take place this November in Kisumu, Kenya and to raise much needed funds for the trip we’ve elected to undertake various fundraising activities including the Moby Dick Sprint Triathlon that will take place in Youghal on the 17/09/22 and a Hospital coffee morning. We’ve set ourselves an ambitious goal of raising at least €5,000. Donations will go directly towards ongoing development of the taught curriculum including an e-learning component, facilitating the ongoing provision of the course at ground level and the provision of equipment to Hospital sites.
