Gladys and Steve Medical Fund

We are requesting funding for medical bills and some car repairs.

Last year, Gladys experienced a major and impactful life change due to the loss of vision in her left eye over the course of four months (July 2016 through October 2016).  During that time she was unable to work.  Her Storytelling and Teaching Artist business was causing her to travel 100-200 miles per day.  With losing her vision, she was going to medical and testing appointments 4 times per week. Her doctors told her not to drive on the Interstate and/or more than 20-25 miles per day. After four months, it was determined that Gladys had a stroke to her optic nerve due to narrowing of the blood vessels in the left side of her brain. All of the medical tests could not explain why it happened.  The loss of vision in her left eye is permanent and non-reversible. She was forced to turn down any further Teaching Artist projects and to shut down her 25 year business. Without any of Gladys’ income for four months, some of our living expenses, utilities, all credit card payments, medical bills and all mortgage payments were put on hold or being paid late. We also were not able to repair our cars.

Fortunately in November, Gladys was employed as a part time Library Associate at the Fust Community Library in Boca Grande; although her income is $400-$600 less per month. The Library is about 20 miles each way on secondary roads. Her doctors have approved the travel because her right eye (thankfully) is “taking over” for the loss of vision in her left eye. You cannot tell by looking at Gladys that she is having this struggle, but the world looks very different from her point of vision/view!

Since then, we have been able to get caught up on our utilities, credit card payments, and mortgage. We received a loan modification from our mortgage company.  We were able in decrease our monthly expenses by approximately $600 per month. We thought we saw a light at the end of the tunnel.

In April, Steve was diagnosed with bacterial pneumonia.  He was in the hospital for four days and home recovering for 3½ weeks.  Steve went back to work on May 22nd.  Although we have excellent health insurance, there are more medical bills that need to be paid. Both Gladys and Steve continue to need medical appointments and more tests.

Our current income versus monthly expenses leaves us with approximately $600 per month for food, gas, prescriptions and medical payments.

We are asking for $8,000 for mostly medical expenses and some for auto repairs.

You do not have to donate much. Anything will help. Thank you to all of you that donate!
