Giving back to the Greens

Gwen and Paul Green have touched and encouraged more lives than can be counted. This is a letter written by Paul and is used here with his permission.

Dear Family and Friends,
On January 9, 2018 I will undergo a lifesaving procedure; I will have a kidney transplant. For the past several years I have been suffering from End Stage Renal Failure. My kidneys have been slowly failing to function as a result of an autoimmune disease that has caused my body to attack them. I have been on PD Dialysis; nightly treatments at home. This treatment keeps me alive, but I continue to weaken and my quality of life is far from what it used to be.

Enter my oldest son Charles, no longer the boy that I bathed, fed, and clothed, but the man who has over the years earned the respect of his peers, elders, and family. Without my knowledge, Charles, who lives in Chicago, was screened and tested, and found to be a perfect donor match. My precious son will risk his life to save mine!

So, I need your prayers. WE NEED YOUR PRAYERS! Please pray that we remain healthy as we await the rapidly approaching date. Pray for the two surgical teams...Charles’ and mine. Pray for Charles who is totally healthy now, but who, if all goes well, will be sicker than he’s ever been and who will have to wait 30 days before he can pickup where he left off in his career and daily routine. (Charles is not only donating a kidney, but his time, traveling expenses, along with lost wages) Pray for Gwen who will be responsible for nursing two patients back to health. Pray as Gwen and I embark on the journey of post-transplant living that will be fraught with lifelong rejection medications, unfathomable expenses, and doctors visits. Pray that Charles’ kidney will “stay awake” and that it will begin working inside of me on the operating table. Finally, please pray for me, not just for the obvious reasons, but because I am frightened for my son and for myself. Although kidney transplants have become a common procedure, I am not arrogant enough to take for granted that success is a foregone conclusion. We need God’s grace and mercy, thus our requests for prayer.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to read this. I have no doubt that we will be sustained physically, emotionally, financially, and spiritually because of prayers.

Gratefully,

Paul A. Green
