Haiti is the poorest country in the Americas and the 3rd poorest country in the world.The majority of the people in the country live on less than 3$ a day.Unlike America,in Haiti there are no food stamps,no Head start program,no aid to families,no job core,no public Health care,no public Housing.
The 2010 earthquake in Haiti claimed over 230,000 lives.
Many of Haiti's children live in adject poverty-in homes with dirt floors,no electricity,no bathrooms for many,going to bed hungry is the rules,not the exception.Over400,000 Haitian children are without parents.1in 5 will dies before age 6.
90% of the primary schools are private.The average cost of tuition ($127-180 per year),though meager by American standards,is often well beyond what a Haitian family can afford to pay.Fewer than 30% of Haitian children will reach 6th grade.
In recent years,the wold bank and the Caribbean Development Bank have provided financial support to help defray some of the cost of tuition,but the situation remains dire.Students still need pencils,papers,rules,backpacks,etc...the essential supplies that every students requires for learning.
