Over the past couple of years I have watched my friend Maria struggle with her many chronic debilitating illnesses, one of which is Secondary Adrenal Insufficiency (SAI) - a life threatening incurable disease where the body loses the ability to make the necessary hormone: Cortisol. Like diabetes, patients with SAI like Maria have to take lifelong daily replacement medication to survive. However unlike diabetes, cortisol cannot be measured like blood sugars can, and if inadequate cortisol needs are not met, then a potentially fatal adrenal crisis can occur.
Maria and her husband are farmers, and times have been very tough for farmers in recent times, and their struggles financially are all too common.
You can imagine how hard the financial and physical struggle would be when there is no reliable income and facing so many serious health issues, unable at times to pay for medication and necessary treatment, doctors visits, tests etc.
I have observed Maria unable to pay for medication at times, and fight her illnesses which can be life threatening, until the next store of grain is sold. There have been too many times I have been so worried that she has not been able to pay for the medical consultations and treatment she has needed. Currently she is very unwell and fighting dental infection, which can be a very serious situation for people with adrenal insufficiency. She has unpaid bills for hospital, cardiac tests, and requires further medical consultation, upcoming MRI, dental care, all of which she cannot afford.
She devotes many hours to a support group called Adrenal Insufficiency United where she actively helps people with the various questions they may have, writes articles on topics about adrenal insufficiency in order to help members understand in simple language, how to manage various aspects of their disease.
Despite all the obstacles in her life, she volunteers her time helping others from her laptop on a special table built by her husband, so she can work from her sofa. She has increased her knowledge about the disease through endless hours of research so that she can can share her knowledge with others. Now it is time for us to help her.
Maria needs a break from financial worry, be able to afford dental treatment, upcoming MRI appointment, doctors visits and prescription medication. Without ongoing specialist care, she will not receive optimal treatment for her complex conditions. Over the past year she has had frequent hospitalizations and our hopes are that with better management of her conditions and less stress, she could see much improved health and less time in hospital.
We are asking for an amount of $35,000 to see her cover her current expenses and through the next 12 months of medical care. Maria gives so much to the AI community, now she needs a break from financial worry. If you can help Maria receive optimal care for her medical needs, Maria and her friends, would be very grateful.
