Girls Education Fund - Cameroon

Donation protected
Not every child of school-going age in Cameroon has access to a classroom, nor quality education. Some of them struggle under trees, leaking roofs, broken benches, just to acquire knowledge. Despite the hardship and tight conditions, these children are still willing to go to school. It is rather unfortunate that this might not be the case for most this coming academic year, especially for girl children.

Fatima is 12 years old, she is in Class 6. She just started her period. Now instead of focusing on her school needs for the upcoming academic year, her parents are more interested in finding a husband for her. They feel that she is getting mature and becoming a burden on the family.

Joyce is from the North West region of Cameroon. Because of the “anglophone crisis,” (an armed conflict in the North West and Southwest Region between separatist fighters and the government), she has missed 3 years of school. Last September, she and her family managed to relocate to Yaounde, to continue with their lives. But with the outbreak of COVID 19, life in the city has become more than they can afford.

Internally Displaced Persons who have fled armed conflict either in the Far North, North West, and South West region of Cameroon to other areas of the country grapple with double scourge during this period. Some of them do not have homes or are in overcrowded or informal homes. Here they live with limited access to food, water, and health care. This exposes them to sexual gender-based violence commonly forced marriages and survival sex, which can shatter a girls dream for a better future and open doors for teenage pregnancies

Families living from hand to mouth have so many challenges during this period. When they can barely afford basic necessities, what will happen to the educational needs of their children?

Leap Girl Africa is an organization with a mission to end gender-based violence. Started by Pertulla Ezigha Ketcha years ago, Leap Girl Africa has a plethora of programs aimed to provide women with financial independence, provide sexual and reproductive health education, and much more.

This fundraiser will help us create a permanent education fund that will increase girls’ access to quality education and learning, especially for Internally Displaced Girls from conflict-affected zones of the North West, South West and the Far North regions of Cameroon, who are at the verge losing the hope to dream. We will be able to give them education grants, scholarships and provide start-up capital for some parents, making the effort a sustainable one.
