Gilbert Stuart MS Goes to Wakanda

The Black Panther movie is a watershed moment in American film. It depicts heroes  that look, talk, act, dream and hurt like our youth. Every single student of color should watch this film and my goal is to do my part as an educator.

My first goal is to pay to take 60 of my students to see this film. This movie will not only provide my African and female students exemplary protagonists that they can relate to but will also reconnect my Latino students to their African ancestry (a lot of them are in denial about being of the diaspora).

My second goal is to provide them a quality movie watching experience. Some of my students have never stepped foot inside of a movie theater.  To that end, I want to provide each student a concession stand allowance and I will be chartering a coach bus. I don’t want my students feeling like they’re “poor” or like they’re inferior on a day they’re to watch a film that’s supposed to empower them. I don’t want them looking on yearningly as other kids with their parents buy candy and popcorn. I’m not going to allow that.

Academically, I will teach a whole unit beforehand on imperialism and the transatlantic slave trade and will facilitate a  student-led dialogue afterwards!
