HELP GIVE OUR BEN A REAL FIGHTING CHANCE
Our Ben is one of five children and a beautiful, happy, loving 9-year-old with a huge battle on his hands.
Four months ago, we received the devastating news that no parent should ever face that our Ben had grade four medulloblastoma – the most aggressive form of brain cancer.
Leading up to his diagnosis our son went from a happy, fun child who loved playing with his brothers and sisters to daily being sick, losing a huge amount of weight and suffering from serve headaches.
We knew something wasn't right - after numerous visits to the hospital and following a MRI scan, doctors confirmed our worst fear after discovering a brain tumour the size of an orange.
Ben was immediately transferred to Kings College Hospital and underwent a five-hour operation to relieve the pressure on his brain. This allowed the doctors to perform a second 13-hour operation to remove the tumour. Although the operation was a success, at the time little did we know our lives were about to change beyond all recognition.
As Ben was diagnosed with grade four medulloblastoma - it means the cancer can return to any part of the body if not treated very quickly.
He will need to undergo both radio and chemo therapy for the next eight months still with the risks that with this treatment it will almost certainly return. With this bleak outlook we thoroughly searched for a treatment that would save our son and give him a proper fighting chance. Presently, not available in the UK until 2018, Proton Beam Therapy is available in other countries and uses a high powered laser beam which would eliminate most of the risks and give him the best possibility of a normal happy long life.
Bens cancer diagnosis has taught us that nothing but our health, precious family and friends matter. We have to give Ben the best chance and will do whatever it takes to save our precious boy.
