Service Dog Needs surgery
Don protégé
Our son Ben has a service dog named Gordon. Gordon has been with us for 2 1/2 years now. Ben has intractable, life threatening epilepsy and two extremely rare genetic mutations that both cause seizures. Ben has more seizures than we can see or count, every day. Sometimes we miss them and walk into a room to find our son having a life threatening seizure, and we have no idea how long it has been going on, or if he may have been injured in the fall. Gordon's job is to tell us when a seizure is happening, and come and get someone. He is relentless to alert us, and sometimes can alert me before a seizure happens, so I can get my son to a safe place. He comforts Ben after a seizure, as in the picture above, and tears around the house or yard to get to me and let me know Ben is in danger. Ben also has developmental delays, and Gordon alerts me to possible dangerous activities such as climbing on counters or chairs. Even as I sit here typing, Gordon came and alerted me to a seizure. Gordon is invaluable to our peace of mind, knowing a far better set of eyes and ears is on Ben at all times.
Unfortunately, Gordon recently tore his ACL and requires surgery. We need him to be healthy and happy to continue to do his job and assist our family. Running is part of the job, and no amount of rest or medication will heal this tear, so it's surgery or retire him as a service dog. He is still young, and we foresee many years of good service ahead, if we can get this tear fixed. It doesn't appear at this time that he will require therapy after the repair, so we are only trying to raise the cost of the surgery and necessary medications at this time.
We would be so grateful for any help you are willing to give.
