Greetings,
My name is Jaime Yawa Dzandu born in Fort- Worth, TX and raised in Hampton, VA. I am a movement artist, choreographer and educator who is deeply invested in exploring ideas around home (the protection of home); the actual land and the body. These explorations have taken me all over the US from Virginia to New Orleans to New York.
Now the journey takes me to Accra, Ghana to visit my family village of Wusuta, for the very first time!
This is my personal HomeComing and I’m equal parts excited, anxious, and honored. I receive daily messages of encouraging words from my family affirming me to get home now! They have been waiting for me. This trip is multi-layered, it’s about reconnecting, paying respects, and conjuring a deeper vision of my freedom.

Passport ($150)
Vaccinations ($500)
Now I need funds to fill in the gaps for:
Toiletries
Luggage
Food
Good sneakers
Historical sites (admission cost)
On August 21, 2018 I depart for Accra, Ghana, to meet my paternal side of my family for the very first time. This trip is right around the corner and I am still in the process of gathering the necessary resources for a 3 ½ week international stay. I would greatly appreciate your support. I may be traveling on my own, but this trip has been a long process involving so many individuals. I owe immense gratitude to the creator and my ancestors for guiding me home. Specifically my late Great Aunt Ellen Lively Bolling (maternal) who even when she was living always reminded me to sit on my stool. I am grateful for my family and friends for their unyielding support always. My mother, father, my sisters, my brothers, my spiritual teachers and all my sister friends! Thank you to Virginia Commonwealth University Dance Department, Family Arts Movement, Angela’s Pulse; Dancing While Black Community, Vessels, Urban Bush Women, Ebony Noelle Golden; Betty’s Daughter’s Arts Collaborative and all my artistic circles that have nurtured and affirmed the importance of honoring embodied knowledge, valuing culture, collective liberation and archiving one’s legacy.
This trip is dedicated to the my late Great Aunt Pearl Lively Bailey, who recently transitioned on August 2, 2018. I’m so grateful that I was able to visit her 2 weeks ago in Washington, DC to comfort her, reflect on her 94 years of living and let her know the good news about my journey to Ghana. May her spirit walk with me as I travel to Africa.
I pray this will open the door for a continual visit.
