Last January 2018, my mom, Evelyn Augusto was diagnosed with breast cancer a few days before she was scheduled to fly here to the United States. On a tourist Visa and no insurance here, my mom had to stay in the Philippines where we could afford her healthcare. My mom has three children, my brother, Davemark and sister, Laviña who are both with her in the Philippines and yours truly, Danahvel. My family and I pooled together financially for my mom's treatment. Health insurance does not exist in the Philippines. We have an equivalent of Medicare but it is not enough. Basically, people only go to hospitals if you are dying or rich enough to afford it. Most often, we rely on prayers and miracles. Thanks to God, my mom has responded positively to the chemo treatment that instead of having her mastectomy next year as predicted, her doctor had scheduled it for September 10, 2018. All this time I have remained positive with my mom and telling her don't worry about the financial situation, my siblings and I will take care of it. The truth is, the chemo treatments have exhausted my brother and I financially and we realized that at this point we could only afford the downpayment for the surgery. The worst thing I had to do was ask my mom to postpone her surgery so we could make better arrangements financially.
Growing up we did not have a lot of money and I was taught that there is no such thing as free charity and you have to work hard to get anything. Coming to America has taught me that there is a lot of hope, opportunity and help if we know to ask for it. Thanks to GoFundMe I have a way to reach out to everyone and ask for your help. My mom's next schedule for surgery is on September 18, 2018 and I am asking for all your help to please help me get my mom to surgery and cut off the cancer growing in her. Any more delays allows for her cancer to spread. The surgery costs about 200,000 pesos or $4000. After that she will have radiation which will add more expenses.
