My Dad's Cancer Treatment Fund

Don protégé
My dad grew up on the farm. He was out in the sun most of the day. This exposure primed him for problems late in his life. He finished High School and enlisted in the Navy. Where again he worked on the deck for 2 years in the sun. He returned home, worked a little, played in a band, met my mom on a blind date. Then he worked hard, second shift, third shift, opposite shift to my mom so they could manage a house and two boys with minimal babysitter time. He worked in a factory, sometimes with depleted uranium shells. This continued through three houses and until my brother and I were through college. He was our backup for anything we needed. Now he needs some backup.

We are gearing up our resources to help my dad fight Squamous Cell Carcinoma that has spread from his forehead to his sinuses, left eye orbit and optical nerve. It has not reached his brain stem yet so now is the time we have to act. Over the next 6 weeks he will complete a treatment plan developed by a team of doctors at John's Hopkins in Baltimore.

Unfortunately, other events were already in motion that make the timing of his cancer treatment extremely difficult. My mom had started the retirement process right before they discovered the extent of the cancer. Their income will be dramatically less right after this treatment plan starts. Her insurance will still be in force until the end of December so will cover his procedures (after that they will be on Medicare and a fixed income).

They live an a hour and a half away from the treatment center. My dad will need 2 radiation treatments, 2 times a day, 6 hours apart for 5 weeks. Driving 4 times a day or staying at the treatment center for 6 hours with other sick patients are not good choices. We want to arrange a safe place to stay near the treatment center. My mom is arranging an intermitent leave of absence so she can be with him at appointments yet keep their insurance coverage.  She is a nurse so will be an excellent advocate and caregiver to help him through this process. However, this further cuts into their resources.

My parents' insurance is covering the treatment, thankfully. Our immediate family have some resources to help but where we will fall short is enough money to cover the place to stay, transportation costs 4 times a day, ~85 copays, and some daily living expenses over the next three months.

The short fall will be $9500. We believe this treatment will give us many more years with dad and grandpa. We are asking for your help to make the treatment and transition afterwards dignified and as stress free as possible - which also may make the treatment more effective.
