Harbor School Rowers to Icebreaker!

Donation protected
Send Harbor School Rowers to the ‘Icebreaker’ Northeast Youth Championships.

The New York Harbor School rowing team has been training hard for this year’s event but due to recent budget cuts, there is not enough funding to send the team to the 2014 race.

Harbor School has participated in this race for the last eight years and had a winning crew in last year’s race! The team is holding bake sales and other fundraising events to cover entry fees but your generous donations are essential for covering the cost of transportation (rowers and boats), food and lodging. Help ensure that New York Harbor School Crew can compete at this important event.

Rowing is Harbor School’s longest running extracurricular activity, and is made possible in part through a partnership with the Village Community Boathouse, located at Pier 40 on the Hudson River. Through rowing, students learn the skills of navigation, managing tides and currents, small-boat handling, on-water safety, teamwork, and leadership. Students row crew-style in fixed-seat, traditionally-built wooden Whitehall Gigs, built by students at the school.

The fall rowing season culminates in the Northeast Regional Open Water Rowing Youth Championships, also known as the Icebreaker, hosted by the Hull Lifesaving Museum in Hull, Massachusetts.

The Icebreaker draws 250 youth open-water rowers, from Maine to New York, to race throughout the day in a series of round-robin-style heats, culminating with a nautical mile race across the bay:
