Gary Shiebler Stroke & Cancer Recovery Fund
Donation protected
This past Wednesday evening my family received the news that my dad, Gary Shiebler had been hospitalized.
We now know that Gary has experienced an embolic stroke which is due in part to a recent cancer diagnosis that is affecting multiple parts of his body. We have been told it is at Stage 4. We are at the beginning stages of getting biopsies, tests and assessments to understand where exactly the source of the cancer is, as well as the next steps to take.
He is currently in the process of getting into a rehabilitation facility to treat the effects of the stroke. He has a mixture of expressive and receptive aphasia which affects his speech and motor skills. He has been receiving physical, occupational and speech therapy and will continue to get more intensive therapy once he is in rehab.
We are praying for a speedy recovery from the stroke so that we can address and begin the treatment and care for cancer. We are still awaiting results on the cancer and will update this page with information once we have it.
Our family & close friends have suggested we start this GoFundMe page to not only raise money for Gary, but also to keep his friends and loved ones updated on the progress he is making.
My dad has been able to tell us that he is tough, he wants to fight and is ready to face this head on. We believe that he can make it through this with the best care we can get him, combined with prayers & miracles!
About this fundraiser:
Although my dad has insurance and is covered for as far as we know, we do expect that this will be a financially challenging time. My dad is unable to work and will be needing rehab to regain his abilities. Then he will be going into cancer treatments which will require all of his energy. In addition to this, my mom will be needing to take off of work to be able to help him in his recovery. There may be an additional need for a nurse or aid depending on multiple factors. I live in San Francisco and will be traveling back and forth to help out in any way I can, with the possibility of needing to temporarily move south. We have approximated expenses for the upcoming months, however because we do not have all the information this is just a guesstimate.
We are currently expecting:
25% to go towards any extra medical bills/prescriptions
25% living expenses, pet care, nutrition (organic foods, supplements)
25% transportation/cleaning/possible home care/aid
15% items of comfort/self care needs for Gary & family
10% unexpected costs
About our family:
As his only daughter, my dad has been my best friend and number 1 fan since the day I was born. He has been married to my mom, Linda for 38 years. They have been on each others team, throughout life's journey for over half of each others lives. We also have a menagerie of rescue animals - 3 horses, 4 dogs and 2 cats. He is adored & a beloved member of the entire family: his brother and sister, nieces & nephews, in-laws, cousins, aunts, uncles, and so on. He brings energy and light to a room, wanting to connect and share with anyone who crosses his path.
Gary has had a passion for animals for his entire life. His generous heart has contributed to the rescue of hundreds of dogs, cats, horses and beyond. Most recently he has been working with Hope Ranch Animal Sanctuary in Anza, CA helping place, transport and care for rescues. In addition to being an advocate for animals he is a brilliant musician and author.
Gary loves and adores his friends & family as well as his music, fishing & rescue community. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. Please keep him in your thoughts, prayers and send him loving energy. We will be updating this page as information comes.
