Corrina ‘Creeny’ Burns

On Wednesday the first of April, the Burns family received a phone call that no family should ever receive. On the other end of the line was the Christie’s Beach (SA) Police, who informed the family that Corrina was no longer with us. Corrina leaves behind four young children: Zeke (12); Tyra (7); and the twins, Andre and Jada (3), who are now without their mother; or their father – due to family violence reasons.

For those who know Corrina and her family, they were plagued by domestic and family violence. Despite all legal avenues being explored and exhausted, with all relevant ‘interventions’ in place, we all know how much protection and ‘intervention’ a piece of paper provides. Unfortunately, these systems and ‘safeguards’ failed to shelter Corrina and her family from the persistent abuse, torment, and evil which would continue to relentlessly haunt them.

Corrina is the 2nd of 7 children in a blended family – the first child for Katrina and Corrina’s biological father, Paul; who, sadly, took his life when Corrina was just 11. Corrina’s first (and older) sister, Cynthia, would be introduced when Katrina met Malcolm Burns. Then came along Samuel; then Zachary; then Keziah; then Stephen and, finally, Jemimah. For those who know the Burns family, you know their generosity. You know their love. But you also know their struggles and that the family is far from ‘well off’.

With the current restrictions that are in place, as a collective, the family has made the extremely difficult decision that it would not be fair to have a funeral and celebrate Corrina’s life during this current climate. When the time is right, however, they want to provide the celebration that Corrina deserves and reunite her with her father. ALL of Corrina’s family and friends will be notified and invited to this service when the time is more conducive. The family’s priority in the interim, however, is to try to fill the incredible shoes of Corrina to continue to support her children – their grandchildren, nieces and nephews - to ensure that their future wellbeing and safety is maintained.

Corrina was incredibly strong. Corrina was brave and ferociously independent. Corrina was stoic and resilient. Corrina was always there for those who needed her – with her wisest of words always comforting, calming, and reassuring. Corrina was loyal, compassionate and empathetic. Corrina loved hard and was loved in return; and Corrina fought fiercely to keep her babies safe. Now is the time where we need to come together to be there for Corrina, Zeke, Tyra, Andre and Jada.

This fund has been established to support Corrina and her children; to assist with bringing Corrina’s body home – to the place that she longed for but was unable to visit due to her fear of her abusive ex-husband – so that she can finally be reunited with her father; so that Corrina’s life can be fittingly celebrated, once these unprecedented times allow; and, most importantly, to continue to uphold Corrina’s legacy in keeping those who mattered most to her, her children, safe.

As a family who are broken, and a family who are drowning in disbelief and sorrow, please help us bring this wonderful mother home. Please help us bring our daughter, our granddaughter, our sister, our aunty, our cousin and our friend home; and help us keep her babies safe.
